Captain Steve Trusso insists he’s “never had a job in my life, never worked a day” – but Faces knows differently.
Trusso grew up near the harbor, and after high school fishing was an obvious job choice. That was 1977; four years later he was the captain of the F/V Malesa, a 57-foot steel trawler operating out of Pillar Point Harbor. Not bad, especially for someone who “never worked.”
When not trawling for sole, halibut, and deepwater (slope and shelf) groundfish, Captain Trusso fishes the Malesa for Dungeness crab. He regrets the declining fishing community, and commented that “it’s become sort of bohemian, and you can’t really make a living at it now.”
When it’s not out harvesting, the Malesa is kept berthed on “E” Dock at Pillar Point Harbor on Half Moon Bay. Watch for Captain Trusso and his crew tobe unloading their catch of groundfish to the wholesalers at the end of the pier.
